Free Books!

Finding new authors and free books on the internet.

If you're an avid reader, you may know that there are many opportunities to score free books on the internet. The catch is that these free books are not (usually) by big name authors, but less well known or debut authors who don't have big publicity budgets to promote their books.

These giveaways are a great way to discover a new favorite author, and summer is the extravaganza time for book giveaways!

First, the regular suspects:

Twitter: If you are on twitter, search the hashtag #freebooks - if you have no idea what I just said, move on.

Goodreads: If you are on Goodreads (and if you're an avid reader and not on Goodreads, you should be), check out the ongoing giveaways. Just click on Explore>Giveaways and you'll find hundreds of books. It's easy to enter, just a click and you're done.

Kindle: There are zillions of public domain books that are free on Kindle and other ereaders, but if Kindle also has a Top 100 Free e-books list that is updated with limited time promotions of copyrighted books (i.e. current releases).

Smashwords: Whether you own a Kindle, Nook, iPad or just a computer, Smashwords carries all e-book formats and allows all authors to offer books for free (Amazon only allows a few limited time promotions).

Blog Giveaways

While the Goodreads giveaways are wonderful, your odds of winning a particular book are much higher in blog giveaways, simply because the number of entrants is usually much smaller. Summer is a popular time for book blog hops, where many blogs doing giveaways are linked together, making it easy for you to "hop" your way to enter for free books.

Here's a small list of blogs where you can enter to win:

Sizzling Summer Author Extravaganza (July 1 - 31) (full disclosure: I'm doing a giveaway for military families on June 6th, so check back then!)

Freedom Giveaway Blog Hop (July 1 - 7) - 249 blogs doing giveaways!

International Blog Hop (July 1 - 31) - 50 books to giveaway!

Great Indie Summer Giveaway (until July 31st) - one entry to win!

There are tons of new sites and giveaways popping up all the time, so this list is nowhere near comprehensive. And it doesn't touch on lower priced ($0.99 and $2.99) e-books. But hopefully it can get you started on some new summer reading!
