Northwest Flag Football Summer League Registration Underway

The Palatine-based flag football league for boys grades 3-6 is run by director Matt May and former Chicago Bear, Palatine mayor and head coach Jim Schwantz.

Registration has begun for the Northwest Flag Football League, for boys grades 3 through 6 living in Chicago’s northwest suburbs.

The league is designed to provide instruction on strategy, specials teams and positions, prior to putting on the pads for tackle football.

“NWFFL provides an alternative to contact football for any kid in the northwest suburbs  who loves the sport but is not ready for contact,” said Matt May, director of operations.

“Our programs’ goal is to improve the overall athleticism of each participant  through the mastery of fundamentals and low impact plyometrics,” he said.

Plyometrics are a training technique designed to increase power and speed, while improving coordination, agility and overall sports performance.

May says there are a number of aspects that make the NWFFL a unique opportunity for particpants, including:

  • Equal playing time at all positions for practice and games.
  • Program goal is to improve overall athleticism of each athlete through mastery of fundamentals and low impact Plyometrics.
  • Expert coaches with years of coaching experience are employed.
  • NO WEEKENDS or TRAVEL.
  • Conveniently located at Harper Community College.
  • All practices are led by Super Bowl champion Jim Schwantz.

NWFFL has two leagues, the College League, which includes boys in grades 3 and 4, and Pro League for boys in grades 5 and 6.

The limit for participants in each league is 55, which May said is to ensure proper instruction of fundamentals through a quality player-to-coach ratio.

“Our goal is to have every player—regardless of size, talent, athleticism, or ability—so they are prepared to participate safely in tackle football upon entering the 7th grade,” the NWFFL website states.

There are currently 15 spots left in the College League, and 25 left in the Pro League. Once those spots are filled, a waiting list will be established.

The NWFFL season begins on August 13 and concludes on September 28.
