NHL Official, Palatine Native Returns to Ice

Andy McElman, 51, suffered serious facial injuries last year after being hit by a puck.

NHL linesman and Palatine native Andy McElman, 51, is back on the ice after spending a year away recovering from multiple facial injuries, according to the Daily Herald. 

During a game in February 2012, McElman was hit in the face with a puck, which shattered his nose, broke his cheekbone and cracked his orbital, according to the article. The 1979 Palatine High School graduate—who began as an NHL official in 1993 and is a member of the NHL Hall of —returned to work as a linesman this past January, according to the Daily Herald.
