Fremd Girls Golf Team Headed to State

A strong finish at Buffalo Grove Golf Course has girls' team packing their golf bags for state.

Fremd girls’ golf head coach Christine Vlaming felt the team’s strong sectional finish this week stemmed from good follow through, but she wasn’t necessarily talking about golf swings.

“Each girl had detailed plans from their practice round on what they wanted to do,” the fourth year coach said of the team’s third place finish at the Buffalo Grove sectionals. “They executed their individual game plan, had good club selection and made smart choices.”

Those intelligent decisions on the course not only led to the team earning a spot to play in downstate Decatur at Hickory Point Golf Club Oct. 14 and 15 in the state’s AA finals, but saw personal and season best scorecards turned in.

Junior Angie Kim led the team with a one over par (75) and shot a personal best while senior Payton McAbee also pulled off a career low with her 83.  Christiana Kim (81) shot a season best, just ahead of fellow senior Madison Zyer (86) and sophomores Jennifer Kim (85) and Dorothy Feng (93).

The team scored their best round of the year at the sectional course with their 324 team points; Highland Park was the top team at 305 points, with MSL east Prospect finishing at 309.

Fremd (330), who finished in second at the Hoffman Estates regional, also finished behind Prospect (308). Angie Kim again led the way for the Lady Vikes with a 78.

“We are definitely playing our best golf now, which is the perfect time for us to be peaking,” Vlaming said of the team’s finishes at regional and sectional. “The girls have been tested over the summer, and with some tough tournaments, and it has paid off.”

“Every one of these girls-one through six- has contributed in getting us where we are at,” Vlaming said. “Each girl can shoot in the 70s, so they’ve really been able to pick each other up if someone is off.”

And it will take some scores in the 70s to contend with the state’s best golfers, especially if Fremd hopes to improve on their last appearance at the state tournament.

In 2002, the Lady Vikes finished tied for ninth place but Vlaming is optimistic about the noise this squad can make.

“Their (individual) games are all coming together at the right time,” said Vlaming.  “They all know what each other is capable of and that takes some pressure off each of them.”
