Palatine High Schools Named Among Most Challenging in State

Fremd High School has been named the 20th most challenging high school in Illinois in recently released rankings from the Washington Post.

The ranking is a slight drop from last year when Fremd was No. 19 on the prestigious list, which includes fewer than 10 percent of high schools nationally.

Palatine High School also made the list at No. 40. This is also an improvement over last year when the high school was ranked at No. 46 on the Washington Post's list of the most challenging high school in the U.S.

Nearby, John Hersey High School received a ranking of seventh on the list, Prospect High School was ranked No. 9 on the list and Buffalo Grove was ranked as the 12th most challenging high school in the state.

In Illinois only 65 high schools of the 682 public high schools and 146 non-public high schools in the state were named to the Washington Post’s list

College Prep School of America in Lombard was ranked as the most challenging high school in Illinois.

The Washington Post list ranks schools through an index formula that uses the following ratio: the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated in May or June of that year.

In releasing the list, the Washington Post also notes the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies and the percentage of graduates who passed at least one college-level test during their high school career, called equity and excellence.
