Immanuel Lutheran Scores High at Championships

Both the girls and boys teams were recently at the 3rd annual National Lutheran Cross Country Championships. The boys team placed won the title, and the girls placed second.

Weather conditions along Lake Michigan were perfect on Saturday, Oct. 20, as the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams from Immanuel Lutheran School in Palatine traveled to Concordia University-Wisconsin, in Mequon, Wis., to participate in the 3rd Annual National Lutheran Cross Country Championships.

The boys’ team ran away with the team title, winning its third consecutive national title, while the Lady Bobcats finished national runner-up.

“It was exciting to return both of our teams to the national championships this year,” said Ken Heinrich, head coach for both teams. “Seeing our boys repeat as national champions and the girls placing second was thrilling.” 

With a flat and fast two-mile course along the shores of Lake Michigan, the Immanuel boys’ team scored 28 points in the final team standings, while the Lady Bobcats posted a team score of 47 points. (The Lady Bobcats actually finished the race tied with Cross Lutheran-Yorkville, Ill. As a result, a tiebreaker was implemented and each schools’ sixth runners’ place was factored in to determine the girls’ championship team. Cross Lutheran-Yorkville edged the Lady Bobcats for the national title.)

Top-five finishers for the boys’ team were: Nate Izewski (11:43.45); Dylan Tapia (12:07.16); Brian Leonard (12:14.35); Josh Turner (12:18.53); and Nathan Sisler (12:31.66). 

Top-five finishers for the Lady Bobcats team were: Nadya Lloyd (12:38.47); twin-sister Danya Lloyd (12:50.14); Anna LaValle (13:16.64); Claire Fathers (13:50.07); and, Jane Smith (13:54.47). 
Participating in the national championships were 229 runners, representing more than 30 Lutheran schools. 

The top-10 boys’ team results: Immanuel Lutheran-Palatine (28 points); St. Peter Lutheran-Arlington Heights, Ill. (93); First Immanuel Lutheran, Cedarburg, Wis. (101); Zion Lutheran-Marengo, Ill, (132); St. Paul Lutheran-Janesville, Wis. (137); Immanuel Lutheran-St. Charles, Mo. (157); St. Paul Lutheran-Lake Mills, Wis. (173); Bethany Lutheran-Naperville, Ill. (187); St. Jacobi Lutheran-Milwaukee (199); and Christ Community Lutheran-Kirkwood, Mo. (223). 

The final girls’ team results at nationals were: Cross Lutheran, Yorkville, Ill. (47 points); Immanuel Lutheran-Palatine (47); Bethel Lutheran-Morton, Ill. (67); Mt. Calvary Lutheran-Waukesha, Wis. (100); St. Paul Lutheran-Lake Mills, Wis. (152); St. Jacobi Lutheran-Milwaukee (153); Immanuel Lutheran-Batavia, Ill. (179); Christ Community Lutheran-Kirkwood, Mo. (190); and Trinity Lutheran-Roselle, Ill. (204). 

In addition to Heinrich, the Immanuel Bobcats also are coached by assistant Marcia Mathes.
