District 15 to Provide Students, Community Free Breakfasts This Summer

Source: District 15 press release

District 15’s School Nutrition Services is set to continue offering free breakfast to the community throughout the summer through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Summer Food Service Program.

The USDA’s program requires any building with free and reduced-price lunch participation of 50 percent or more holding summer programs to offer at least one free meal per day.

“Lack of nutrition during the summer months is a serious concern, and these meals will meet nutrition standards set forth by the USDA,” said Bobbie Desprat, School Nutrition Services director.

This year, the program will be offered at John G. Conyers Learning Academy and Jane Addams, Kimball Hill, Lake Louise, Lincoln, and Virginia Lake Schools. These breakfasts, which will be served Monday through Thursday (except for Thursday, July 3), will be free to all students participating in the Extended School Year, Summer Early Literacy Academy, and Summer Blast programs offered at these locations, as well as to community members 18 years of age and under, regardless of income.

Additionally, School Nutrition Services will provide free breakfasts at Falcon Park to those enrolled in the Northeast Palatine Summer Camp, as well as anyone in the community age 18 or under, regardless of income. (The camp is run by the Palatine Opportunity Center in partnership with District 15 and a number of other public and private entities.)

Also, at Thomas Jefferson School, breakfasts will be made available for purchase by all students on a continuation of the school year program.

Students who normally pay full or reduced prices for their lunches will be able to buy these breakfasts for their full or reduced prices ($1.25 or 30 cents, respectively), while those who qualify for free meals during the school year will be able to eat at no charge.
