District 15 Proposing 2013-2014 Calendar Changes

If approved by the board of education, the school year for District 15 students would start a week earlier, and end on May 30. The school board is expected to vote at its November 14 meeting, and is asking for parent input.

District 15 is proposing changes to the 2013-14 school calendar first reviewed by the Board of Education in January 2012.

Under the new calendar proposal, classes would begin one week earlier than in previous years. The year would begin with two institute days on Thursday and Friday, August 15 and 16, 2013. Students would then begin with a full week of instruction starting on Monday, August 19, 2013. The school year would end on Friday, May 30, 2014, should the District not use any snow days.

The new proposal for the 2013-14 school calendar differs from calendars for Township High School Districts 211 and 214. While winter and spring breaks would occur at the same time for all three districts, the first day for students of both high school districts is Wednesday, August 21—two days after District 15 students would start.

The survey will close on Wednesday, November 7, and the Board will vote on the calendar proposal during its next regular meeting on Wednesday, November 14.

This is not a good idea. The weather is still too nice and warm for kids to be back in school this earlly in the summer and too cool to be out May 30th. What ever happened to starting after Labor Day and getting out when warm days are longer? I thought the schools did this in the past to cut down on heating and airconditioning costs to the district.I have found that at the end of August kids (and parents) rush outdoors after school to enjoy the weather rather than concentrate on homework before the cold dark weather shut in begins.

I am not necessarily against this but I haven't seen *why* the change is being proposed.
