Raise a Pint on St. Paddy's Day...But How Much Does That Cost You in Taxes?

Beer isn't free. That news hurts, so while you go drown your sorrows over that news in another pint, here's a thought. How much does each beer sold in Illinois get taxed?

On St. Paddy's day in the United States, it is common for a beer (or two or three) to be consumed. But how much that beer costs might vary state to state.

That's because when you buy a six-pack at the store or a round at the bar, not all the money you pay goes to the brewery or the distributor. There’s a tax on that brew, but it’s a tax that varies state-by-state. Illinois is in the middle of the pack nationally with the 27th highest tax ($0.23 per gallon), but among our Midwest neighbors, we’re expensive.

Then raise a pint, and as the Irish say, "Sláinte!"

As a St. Patrick's Day bonus, here's an Irish blessing for you: May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and a smooth road all the way to your door.

Doremus, does a man that is 'confident' in his abilities really need to join a group that protects his inabilities?

Frankly I'm not comfortable going down this path buddy, I know life can be hard and we all look to 'family' to help us at some point, you've obviously been sold a basket of bad goods including this faux 'union' family. I've told you that my family is important to me and so is the health of Illinois. This public union debt will destroy Illinois one way or another if un-reformed. Illinois needs a new value system.

Phaedrus, You sound like one of those selfish Ayn Rand followers.

What part buddy, was it the family part?

This is such a non-story. Of course beer is taxed. And the fact that it's by the gallon (?) makes it seem all the more irrelevant.
