Sinkhole: Palatine Seeks To Shift Road Closure

The sinkhole that has caused lane closures on Hicks Road near Dundee Road could take a week or more to fix.

Palatine Public Works Director Matt Barry said southbound lanes on Hicks Road are now open past Midtown Athletic Club. He said after Midtown there are lane closures and that Hicks Road drops down to one lane of traffic in either direction.

The sinkhole that extends under Hicks Road could take a week to fix, and village officials have requested lane closures be shifted to improve access to homes and businesses.

, reducing access to several apartment complexes, Midtown Athletic Club and UPS, among other locations. The road is under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Department of Transportation.

“We’ve asked IDOT to move the closure to just south of Midtown (Athletic Club),” Ottesen said.

Midtown Athletic Club suggested on its Facebook page that people access the club from Dundee Road.

Motorists should expect some lane closures in the area for most of this week. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Chicago has to repair a sanitary sewer line that collapsed. The line is located 30 feet underground.

The sewer line collapsed after Palatine receive early Saturday, July 23.

The collapse of the line created a sinkhole that extends under Hicks Road.

“The western-most lane of traffic has been completely undermined by it,” Ottesen said. “Any kind of vehicle traffic on it would drop the roadway.”

Ottesen said an alternate, above-ground sewer line will be added to the area while work continues to repair the underground line. Once the Water Reclamation District completes its work, IDOT will cut out and replace the affected section of roadway.

“We have been told that it will take the better part of this week,” Ottesen said.
