Pipe Reinforcement Work Planned at Sinkhole Site

Metropolitan Water Reclamation District will work around the clock for a week to reinforce 200 feet of pipe near intersection of Hicks and Dundee Roads.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD) is planning to make improvements on 200 feet of sewer pipe located at Hicks and Dundee Roads, .

The village council approved a waiver Monday that allows MWRD to work 24 hours a day until the job is completed, which weather permitting will take approximately one week, said Palatine Public Works Director Matt Barry.

“Immediately north of the sinkhole, MWRD will install a liner which will reinforce the existing sanitary sewer; this requires a 24-hour operation so heated water can be used to cure the liner,” Barry said.

The around the clock work schedule also will help expedite sewer and manhole work on the west side of Hicks north of Dundee Road, and speed up the time it takes to complete the entire project.

Southbound Hicks Road will be reduced to one lane for the duration of the project.

Barry said residents living directly across from the work area and north to Foxfire condominiums near Hicks and Rand Roads will be notified by the village roughly a week before the work begins.

Currently, MWRD is still in the process of obtaining permits from the Illinois Department of Transportation for the lane closures, and there is no date certain yet for the project start.

Barry said the goal is to have it completed by the end of January.

The sinkhole formed on July 23, 2011 after 5.5 inches of rain fell in a three hour period. The record rainfall caused flooding throughout the village.

The hole developed on property adjacent to the forest preserve on the west side of Hicks Road near Dundee Road.

Road closures remained in place from late .
