Parking Prohibited on 2 Residential Streets, Traffic Signal Changes Approved

Parking will now be allowed only on certain portions of Helen Road and Cedar Street, and traffic signals at 24 village intersections will undergo a number of upgrades.

The Palatine Village Council recently approved an agreement between Palatine and the Illinois Department of Transportation for traffic signal upgrades, and prohibited parking on two residential streets.

IDOT Upgrades Traffic Signal Equipment

Twenty-four intersections across the village located along state highways will undergo a number of upgrades, including the change to low energy LED (Light-Emitting Diode) lights from incandescent lamps, and installation of power supplies so that even during outages, traffic signals will continue to function.

Countdown Pedestrian Signals (CD Ped) also will be installed at a majority of the intersections.

The entire cost of the project is $406,429.55 – 2.5 percent, or $10,432.80 of that amount is required to be paid to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) by the Village of Palatine.  The remaining amount will be covered by the IDOT, who will begin bidding on the project in early fall and will complete the work.

The village’s portion of the cost represents modifications at 14 of the intersections, and according to a village memorandum, and is calculated by the number of street ‘legs’, or connecting streets to the project areas, that are owned by the village.

Prohibited Parking Areas Established on Helen Road and Cedar Street

Parking and traffic conflicts were previously identified by Village of Palatine staff, and the village council recently voted to approve certain restrictions on both residential streets.

Cedar Street: Parking will now be prohibited on the east side of Cedar Street, from Palatine Road to five feet south of the existing driveway for 17 S. Cedar Street. Parking is also prohibited on the west side of Cedar Street from Palatine Road to 20 feet south of Johnson Street.

Background: Cars that previously attempted to leave or enter Cedar Street have experienced difficulty during evening peak hours and on weekends due to cars being parked on both sides of the street just south of Palatine Road.

Helen Road: Between Plum Grove Road and to a point 110 feet east, parking is now prohibited on both sides of Helen Road.

Background: Issues also included difficulty of cars trying to enter and leave Helen Road when vehicles were parking on both sides of the street during evening peak hours.
