Palatine to Host Workshop to Discuss Future of Housing Market

Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mt. Prospect and Rolling Meadows and Palatine entered into a collaboration to examine future of housing in Northwest Cook County.

The village of Palatine is hosting a community workshop to talk about what the future of housing looks like and it wants the public's opinions.

In 2011, Palatine entered into an intergovernmental agreement with Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Mt. Prospect and Rolling Meadows,—creating the Northwest Suburban Housing Collaborative. Together, the municipalties will pool together resources to address short- and long-term housing needs for Northwest Cook County.

Last month, Drew Williams-Clark, principal regional planner for the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and Mary Lu Seidel, director of the Northwest Suburban Housing Collaborative, gave a presentation to the village council of an overview of the Homes for a Changing Region report.

In the presentation, Williams-Clark said the area's priorities are preserving rental housing, foreclosure strategies, neighborhood stabilization and regional planning. He said the coming decades will be a time of urbanization and central city growth. Multi-family homes are expected to rebound first from the housing market and future homes will be smaller and energy-efficient, Williams-Clark said.

The report forecasts what the housing demand will be in Palatine in 2040 compared with what the current housing market offers today, and it breaks it down according to income. The collaboration's recommendations will take into account the current and future needs of each segment and preferences of those segments in housing type.
