Palatine to Consider Approving Plans for New Grocery Store Concept

Peapod is proposing a new pilot pick-up store concept.

The Palatine village council will consider approving plans for a new pick-up grocery store concept on Northwest Highway at its meeting Monday.

Peapod, a home delivery grocery store where customers order food online, is proposing building a pilot store in Palatine where customers would place grocery orders online for pickup at a specific time and place. The store would be located at 790 W. Northwest Highway, in the former 4,000 square foot Boston Market building.

Upon arriving at the store, customers would announce themselves either through a call box or at a window and an attendant would load the groceries into the car. Customers do not enter the store and there is no drive-through window, according to village documents.

Food is delivered once or twice daily from the Pea pod warehouse in Lake Zurich in insulated 'totes.' Each 'tote' is presorted for the customers order. No food handling occurs at the pick up location. If a customer does not pick up their food on the scheduled day, the food is delivered back to the Lake Zurich warehouse each night. No food is stored in the facility overnight.

The Health Department has reviewed the proposed operations has no immediate concerns, according to village documents.

The village council will vote on the matter at its June 11 meeting at 7 p.m.

Correction: This article previously stated the building is 27,000 square feet. The article has been updated to state the actual size of the proposed store is 4,000 square feet while the entire subject property contains 27,000 square feet.
