Palatine To Address Flooding on Capri Drive

Palatine is planning to make improvements on Capri Drive that aim to lessen flooding problems in the area.

Palatine is planning to increase the size of storm sewers on Capri Drive.

"We [have been] aware of some flooding in this area," Palatine Public Works Director Matt Barry said. "So when we looked at how to improve the neighborhood, we knew that it would require multiple improvements; creek project, storm sewer projects."

Barry said the improvements for Capri Drive from Rand Road to Buffalo Creek are part of the village's long-term plans for the area.

"This neighborhood the storm sewers are not large enough to handle the flow and there is not enough storm  sewers in all the locations that are needed," Barry said. "So this would serve two purposes."

Barry said the project will cost about $300,000 and will be funded through a federal grant. Barry said the engineering and design should occur in the fall and winter, with construction possibly beginning in early 2012.

"This is one of the last key, identified improvements in our flood control plan for this neighborhood," Barry said.

Barry said the storm sewers in the area now are about 18-inches in diameter and that will increase to 30-inches to 36-inches. Also, some low lying areas that do not have storm sewers will have storm sewers installed.

Several areas of Palatine endured that dumped more than 5 inches of rain on the village in less than three hours.

Barry said the improvements would have decreased the intensity of flooding that occurred on July 23 in areas that had storm sewers and it would have "greatly reduced flooding in areas that did not have storm sewers."

On Monday the approved a contract not to exceed $19,730 with W.C. Doland Engineering.
