Palatine Road Construction Winding Down

The Palatine Road construction project is progressing and two-way traffic should resume east of the railroad tracks by next week.

The Palatine Road construction project is progressing and two-way traffic is expected to return east of the railroad tracks by end of next week.

"We would have full asphalt from curb to curb within the downtown area next week as well as the reopening of two-way traffic on Palatine Road east of the railroad tracks," said Palatine Village Manager Reid Ottesen.

Palatine Road has been down to one-way, westbound traffic only since construction resumed in April. Although two-way traffic has been open west of the railroad tracks on Palatine Road, there still has been extensive work with sidewalks and streets torn up.

Ottesen said, barring inclement weather, the concrete work should be done, with areas again being open to pedestrian traffic at the end of June.

The Palatine Road construction project began last summer. The $9.4 million project has included widening Palatine Road from Smith Street to Kerwood Street which is just west of Route 14. Plum Grove Road also has been widened from Slade Street to Washington Street.

The project also involved the reconstruction and reconfiguration of the railroad crossings at Palatine road and Plum Grove Road and the addition of turn lanes at various intersections along Palatine Road.

The project originally was slated to be completed last year, but the Laborers and Operating Engineers Strike in July as well as issues with the location of utility lines pushed the project into 2011.

The bulk of the project is being paid for with federal stimulus dollars and through other federal grant programs. Palatine's cost is about $800,000.
