Palatine Police and Fire Victorious in Palatine Bowl

Sunday might well have been a perfect fall day for football.

The 3rd annual Palatine Bowl featured the Palatine police and fire 'Jocks' team taking on a the 'Nerds' team of local businesses. The charity benefit game was held at Ost Field.

The Palatine High School Midnight Blues kicked off the event by singing the National Anthem, and the Harper College Poms and Dance squads added some spirit by cheering on both teams.

The annual charitable game is sponsored by Lavelle Law's nonprofit organization-Lavelle Law Charities, and began in 2009. Each year a different charitable organization is chosen to be a recipient of funds raised.

This year's cause was Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA), an organization that provides recreational activities for adults and children with disabilities. 

More than 50 spectators came out to root on their team while enjoying hot dogs, chips and beverages on the cloudy and cool afternoon. Children enjoyed face painting and a moon bounce, in addition to a dance contest at half-time.

“It’s all about charity and a good chance for some camaraderie;
bottom line we’re here for a reason, and that is to raise money for a great cause,” said Brook Cirks, Palatine police officer.

The high scoring game ended with the Jock's winning 42-28.

There were six Palatine firefighters and ten Palatine Police who played against business professionals representing Lavelle Law, Preventative Health Care, Oak Alley Saloon, and the Palatine Inn in addition to other area businesses.

“We’re here getting the community together for a cause, showing how
police and fire along with business people in the community can give back,” said Joe Corso, Palatine firefighter. “But there’s always bragging rights.”

Unfortunately for the Nerds, they will have to wait until next year to have another chance at bragging rights. But win or lose, those involved are grateful for the opportunity to give back.

“We all enjoy getting together for another great cause each year,” said Dr. Daman Singh, Preventative Health Care owner.

Leaders of both the fire and police departments are both very supportive of the event.

“We always support getting the guys involved in the community, not only when they are on-duty, but off-duty as well,” said Scott Anderson, Palatine fire chief.

“It’s a great event and we’re happy to be a part of it every year,” said John Koziol, Palatine police chief.
