Kozlowski Defeats Wagner in Palatine Village Council Race

After 24 years, Jack Wagner's tenure on the Village Council comes to an end.

Long-time Palatine District 5 Village Council member Jack Wagner lost his bid for re-election Tuesday against newcomer Kollin Kozlowski.

In unofficial returns, Kozlowski had 592 votes to 455 for Wagner with all precincts reporting. Wagner stopped by Lamplighters, 60 N. Bothwell St., to congratulate Kozlowski.

"I don't know what I'm going to do with myself now," Wagner said with a chuckle. "I kind of had a feeling. You know you get a feeling, things are changing, people want change. They just think that maybe some of us old guys need to move aside and let some of the new fresh ideas come in."

Wagner has served on the village council since 1987.

"He's been great for me, a wealth of knowledge," Palatine Mayor Jim Schwantz said. "[He's] always there if I have questions. [He knows] the history of the village history and the history of what's gone on in the past. . . . That will be missed."

Schwantz said he remained neutral in the race and wanted to respect the publics choice.

"Obviously some new blood, some excitement and a lot energy. And I know Kollin's going to bring that," Schwantz said. "I stayed out of it. My feeling is very simple, I'll work with whoever the public decides to vote in... I'm excited to work with Kollin and will miss my time [with Jack.]"

The council race was Kozlowski's first campaign.

"Honestly I just think it was knocking on all those doors," Kozlowski said. "Talking with the individuals face to face. I think that was something I stood on and really pushed."

Kozlowski said he thought both campaigns were relatively clean. When Wagner showed up the two shook hands and talked about a smooth transition.

"I'll assist him in any way that I can," Wagner said. "I have no regrets and I have no animosity against this fella. He seems like a nice fella and I think he'll do a good job."
