Former Idols Building Set for Demolition this Month

The bar closed its doors in November 2010 after its owner was convicted of a felony.

The building that housed the former Idols bar at the corner of Rand and Dundee roads is scheduled for demolition later this month.

The building, located at 1601 N. Rand Road, has sat dormant for a year and a half.

On Jan. 10, a citation was issued to the building’s owner for not having a fire alarm or sprinkler system in operable conditions. On Jan. 25, a fine was issued for $3,000 and was continued to Feb. 8 and again to Feb. 22, where the demolition order was issued for April 25, said Sam Trakas, director of administrative services for the village of Palatine.

Trakas said the property’s owner, Dina Kritsas, has obtained a demolition permit from Cook County. At this time, there are no plans for the property and it’s ultimately up to the Kritsas as to whether she wants to sell the land or redevelop it, Trakas said.

after its owner, Michael Koumandarakis, was convicted of criminal damage to property and misdemeanor battery following an incident at his home in June 2008 in which he smashed the window of a car with what Lake County Sheriff's police described as a long stick or bat.
