Duckworth Campaign Sets Fundraising Record

Duckworth will report raising nearly $900,000 in the second quarter.

Democratic 8th Congressional District candidate Tammy Duckworth has raised a record amount of money in the second quarter, her campaign said.

Duckworth, who is running against Republican Joe Walsh, will report raising at least $885,540 for the second quarter of 2012, her strongest fundraising quarter yet. Her campaign said this is believed to be the highest quarter for any House challenger from either party.

Nearly 92 percent of the individual contributions Duckworth received this quarter were for $100 or less, with the average individual contribution being $79.97.

Earlier this month, Walsh created a national controversy when he said Duckworth should stop talking about her military service, according to the Huffington Post. Duckworth lost both her legs while fighting in Iraq.

We need people to give or give back to a country that allowed some to get very rich without giving back to the less fortunate. I don't remember hearing about Joe Walsh sacrificing anything for the good of anyone but himself! Many people mistake his rhetoric as hi strength. It merely restates his contempt for those who need help from those who can do so. Yes Joe, she actually sacrificed dearly for a war started by "W" with no reason other than giving more money to the greedy pigs wallowing in it! She is much more qualified for the office than you will ever be.
Ralph July 13, 2012 at 07:36 PM
Other than win an election based on her war injury (as David Axelrod exploits) How has she improved life in Illinois? Is Illinois in such fine shape that the same ole same ole deserve another run? She is just another machine. Your continual "W" statements by you and the like, tells most of us you are a staunch democrat and have the inability to remove you head from your arse, as you don't recall who has been running this mess(Illinois) At this point Democrats are the problem. we are all finding out that a country that doesn't need to work to survive, needs to tax thoes that do work, to compensate for those who don't? JFK would be rollin'. (aka "ask not....".) I hate Republicans but if it wasn't for them we would be force-fed Marxism and run by a dictatorship due to progressive democratic agendas. Commence typical non-factual insults........
bill trudeau July 13, 2012 at 08:03 PM
She's a lieutenant Colonel in the Illinois National Guard with a master's in international affairs from George Washington University. She was studying for her doctorate at NIU when deployed to Iraq. It would be hard for her to have done anything for the people of Illinois as of yet due to the fact that she's never been elected to public office. She's not the typical empty head running for office, and might just have a little insight in foreign affairs that most others don't.
Chibuster July 13, 2012 at 09:15 PM
Duckworth needs big money. Tammy Duckworth was not drafted. She was an adult when she signed on to the Reserve 'contract to serve'. She volunteered to give to the USA military service, maybe for the compensation of education etc. that the military service offered her. Was the US Army paying for her Doctorate at NIU when she was called up to fulfill her signed obligation ? If you want to know how she stands on the issues that face the people of the 8 th IL, you should go to her web-site, that will be how she operates in the congress. "Go to my web site." in her words. Nice answer Tammy. She can't 'speak' on the issues. Because she does not know them nor care about the people of the 8th Dist. To see how she thinks, just vote for Tammy, then look in her web site. She will represent you in Congress from the same web site. Web Site Remotely in allegiance with Axelrod, Emanual, Husein O, 'Just sign the bill..then we'll see what's in it " Evidently the same political party as the Pelosi mantra.
bill trudeau July 13, 2012 at 10:02 PM
We haven't had a draft since 1975, and unless they're taking 17 year-olds, everybody in the military is an adult.
Abigail July 13, 2012 at 10:34 PM
Bill, what does the draft and your statement above have to do with anything? Ms. Duckworth volunteered and as Chibuster said, maybe that's how her education has been paid for. She will do nothing but rubber-stamp everything Obama wants. If Romney is elected, she will do nothing but vote against anything he wants. She will be a clone of Nancy Pelosi, which means that--despite his failings--Joe Walsh is the better person for the job. We cannot afford to have another Obamaite in congress to take our country further into socialism.
Stuart Tindall July 13, 2012 at 11:00 PM
And that's how we know you're retarded.
Lock Nelson July 13, 2012 at 11:21 PM
Boy - a lot of big statements here.... and frankly, I don't know what to believe. But I do know, for me as one, I would rather have an educated representitive in Washington than a less educated one. And I do know this. We, the American taxpayers, long ago, after the so called "good war" set up programs whereby those serving in the military could receive financial assistance to fund education. The "GI Bill" has been used by generations of Americans who served in the military to get an education. So - its pretty obvious to me - that for many people this assistance is a significant motivator to "sign on". Now - that all said - does it really make sense for us to ask "Gee - did Tammy Duckworth join the military so she could get education on the taxpayer's dollar"? Sorry - to even make that argument is petty, and frankly - un-American. It iunfair and unfounded.
Abigail July 13, 2012 at 11:30 PM
I don't have a problem with anyone using the GI Bill to get an education--several members of my family have done so, including one who is a college professor at a state university. What I have a problem with is someone thinking their military service makes him or her qualified for public office. So, Lock Nelson, I'm sure we can make the determination of what is "un-American" on our own without you. And, no, it is not un-American for anyone to question whether Ms Duckworth is qualified or not, or to question why she feels her military service makes her qualified. (Just thought I throw that in there in case you want to bring that up too.)
Margaret July 14, 2012 at 03:35 AM
Tammy Duckworth, in addition to her military service and her educational achievements, served as Director of Illinois' Department of Veterans' Affairs. After the 2008 election, President Obama appointed her Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs. If you go to her website, you can click on Issues and see her position on the problems facing the country. If you read her biography, you will find that her joining the military was continuing a family tradition--someone from her family has served in the military since the Revolutionary War. I worked for her campaign as a volunteer in 2006, and met and spoke with her. I can unequivocally say that she is an intelligent, informed, and sincere person who will represent the 8th District with honor, as she did with her military service in Iraq. (Unfortunately, I will not be able to vote for her this year, since I am in a different district.) After reading some of the comments here, it just reinforces the sad state of our political discourse, now so infused with misinformation and nastiness. For example, to even question someone using the GI Bill as some kind of "freeloading" on the American taxpayer shows a lack of knowledge of what the GI Bill is all about. It is the GI Bill that is significantly responsible for the growth of the middle class since WWII. My husband, who served his country in Vietnam, used the GI Bill to get a Master's degree after his return.
Kathryn July 14, 2012 at 03:57 AM
Thank you, Margaret, for a reasonable reply to those who malign Tammy Duckworth. I am also one whose district has changed from 8 to 6 and am sorry not to be able to vote for Tammy. I have yet to understand what Joe Walsh has done as a Representative except to disgrace the position.
bill trudeau July 14, 2012 at 01:33 PM
I guess you didn't actually read chibuster's second and third sentences, but skipped directly to the fourth. Just an observation.
Independence666 July 14, 2012 at 02:48 PM
Regardless of her military service and sacrifice, which is commenable, Duckworth is just another far left leaning politician, who will be rubber stamping Obama's idiodic policies. Hasn't Illinois sent enough of these clueless folks to Washington?
Margaret July 15, 2012 at 10:22 PM
In my earlier comment, I talked about "misinformation and nastiness." The above comment is an example of this. It is filled with slogans, e.g., "far left leaning politician," rubber stamping Obama's idio[t]ic policies," and "clueless folks." Now, what does that. I'm sorry but that is just another example of low information and nasty discourse. What is a far left leaning politician? What are the President's idio[t]ic policies. And who are these clueless folks and what are they clueless about. According to Tammy Duckworth's website, her priorities are to create jobs for the unemployed, provide for returning veterans, among a variety of other issues discussed. That certainly is not "clueless," nor "idio[t]ic." It was "idio[t]ic" to waste the federal government's surplus at the end of the Clinton years on tax cuts to, among others, the 1%, whose tax rates are now lower than at time in recent memory. It was "idio[t]ic to pass a drug bill without providing a way to pay for it. It was "idio[t]ic to lie about WMDs in Iraq, just to fight over that country's oil. It was "idio[t]ic to give corporations tax breaks to take American jobs overseas. It was "idio[t]ic to allow Wall Street to run rampant without regulation. The list could go on and on of what happened during the Bush years. It is not "idio[t]ic," as Pres. Obama is trying to do, to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, create jobs, protect women's rights, cut spending, and get the 1% and corporations to pay their fair share.
Margaret July 15, 2012 at 10:25 PM
My above comment should have the word "mean" after "what does that." Sorry.
Independence666 July 16, 2012 at 12:25 AM
Margaret, you are obviously an extremely loyal Democrat. It's amazing to me that you can't see that the "stimulus", "cash for clunkers", and "Obama-care" were idiotic policies, and that the last thing we need is another person in congress rubber stamping more stupidity like this. We are ideologically so part apart that it really doesn't make sense to argue with you.
Chibuster July 25, 2012 at 08:50 PM
Margaret.... did you see Duckworth's TV debate 5/11/12 WGN Chl 9 Chicago with Congressman Walsh ? Did you hear her use the words 'crack pot ideas' of the TEA party; declaring Congressman Walsh was embracing these ideas''...statement ? Was that 'nastiness or misinformation' on her part ? She could NOT Explain her 'own' statement. She doesn't know what the issues are, nor can speak of them. Did you hear ANY ideas about helping current businesses or life style in the 8th, financial improvements by downsizing Big Government dictates across the USA coming from her mouth ? ... ANY ideas for tax relief of the residents of the 8th Dist. ? Who's Out of touch ? Who in their right mind doesn't want a job for the 23 Million workers 'out of work' in the USA or for 'a job for a returning veteran' who had one before they went overseas ? 224,000 Federal, State, local GOVERNMENT JOBS created with our tax money by her mentor. She speaks for herself alright. Issues Only from her web site; of which is written like Hussein Obama's books, by someone else. Duckworth's job was working for the US Military, a family tradition. Sounds like a government worker trying for another government (taxpayer paid) JOB. That's not a qualification for US Congress.
A. M. Kelly August 12, 2012 at 10:10 PM
Abigail: Since our country's military doesn't pay top dollar to those risking their lives in it's wars, it's been standard policy for at least seventy years to award benefits to those among us brave and patriotic enough to do it. I don't know how Ms. Duckworths paid for her education, and, frankly I don't care...I do know know she answered her country's call and lost BOTH her legs doing it and I'd say that she's EARNED at least tuition money for doing that, wouldn't you? Anyone begrudging her or any soldier in that circumstance should be ashamed of themselves....They are cheap hypocrites who only "support the troops"..when the troop member belongs to their political party and costs them NOTHING. In response to the person who asked "what she did" for Illinois, I will tell you that she headed the Veteran's Adminsitration and helped find jobs for this state's returning vets, but the "values" of some here may deem that "worthless". She sacrificed for her country and she met her responsiblitiles and I'd say that puts her at least ten miles ahead of "Dead Beat Dad" Joe Walsh, who didn't even support his own children, having to have his congressional check GARNISHED for the $100,000 plus he owed before the publicity and pressure got to him to finally pay....Disgusting.
A. M. Kelly August 12, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Abigail: What "socialism" are you talking about?...Can you even DEFINE the word?...President Obama, is HARDLY a "socialist", in fact he is THE most conservative democratic president we've ever had...Period. Do yourself a favor -- Turn off Fox News and read a history book...You'll actually learn what "socialism" means, and learn that EVERY country in the Western World has some "socialist" elements in it, that our country has had them for DECADES, that our country has the fewest, and the few we DO have are wildly popular accross party lines!.
A. M. Kelly August 12, 2012 at 10:27 PM
Bill: Tammy Duckworth has "improved life in Illinois" by helping to find jobs for returning Illinois soldiers in her role as head of the Illinois Veterans Administration. In addition to her sacrificing her legs, if not her life, that seems like a Hell of a lot more than "Dead Beat Dad" Joe Walsh ever did.
A. M. Kelly August 12, 2012 at 10:33 PM
Again, Abigail, Ms Duckworth acted as the chief executive of the U.S.National Veteran's Affairs Office and before that, she headed the Illinois Veterans Affairs Office...Can you tell me how that might make her "less qualified" than Joe Walsh who had no notable experience in either the private OR public sector when he ran for office?
A. M. Kelly August 12, 2012 at 10:41 PM
Independence666: I think it's time we defined our terms: What, exactly, is "far left" in your opinion, and what, in your opinion, makes Tammy Duckworth one of these "far left" politicians? If you can't answer those questions, you're simply repeating talking points whose actual meaning you don't understand.
A. M. Kelly August 12, 2012 at 10:57 PM
"Sound like another government worker trying for another government (taxpayer paid) JOB" Chbuster, what do you think our SOLDIERS are?..Clue: They are "government paid workers"....Would you like to get rid of the MILITARY because it's a "government paid job'?....How about eliminating the the Police force and the Fire fighters, with them, since they're all "governement tax payer paid jobs" too?....You anti-government extremists have taken this "argument" to the point of absurdity!
