Automobile Repair Shop Rejected, Pepboys Approved

Plans for an automobile repair shop at 640 E. Northwest Highway were rejected by the Village Council Monday.

The Palatine Village Council rejected Monday plans to convert an old stereo installation business into an auto repair shop at 640 E. Northwest Highway.

Palatine Village Manager Reid Ottesen recommended against approving the project by Nu-Forms Inc. in part because of its close proximity to a nearby home at 306 S. Elmwood. At one time the two properties were actually part of the same lot, but were subdivided.

"The separation between structures is actually less than 10 feet," Ottesen said. "So you don't get any of what normally would be required of a zoning buffer from a business district from a residential use."

Ottesen said he believed there were much less intense uses that could occupy 640 E. Northwest Highway and have less of an impact on the nearby homeowner.

Two residents voiced concerns about the project at a previous hearing at the Zoning Board of Appeals and a petition was presented with 13 signatures.

"We do have some concerns that come with this kind of business, the largest being the noise that comes with this type of business," said Bob Klausing, whose parents own the home at 306 S. Elmwood.

The council unanimously rejected the plan.

Earlier in the meeting the council approved plans for a Pepboys auto repair shop at 315 W. Northwest Highway. Pepboys was taking over the space of an already existing auto repair shop.
