4 out of 5 Deal With Near-Poverty, Job Loss

The jobless rate in Cook County was 10.8 percent in June while the national unemployment rate was 7.8 percent, according to the Illinois Department of Employment statistics.

Four out of five American adults deal with near-poverty, unemployment or dependance on welfare "for at least part of their lives," according to survey data

A larger gap between the rich and poor in the country and a loss of high-paying manufacturing jobs is partially to blame for this economic trend, according to the Associated Press.

Locally, the unemployment in Cook County hung at 10.8 percent, which is above the national rate of 7.8 percent as well as the state's rate of 9.8 percent, according to June jobless statistics. That rate is up from a year ago when the county unemployment rate was 9.9 percent.

Among Palatine residents, the unemployment rate was 7.7 percent in June, according to the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
