Kildeer police said Monday afternoon that motorists should avoid using Rand in this area for at least the next several hours. The road is closed in both directions and is causing long traffic backups.

"The gas leak is right in the middle of the road," said Kildeer Police Cmdr. Mike Bratko. Workers from Nicor are on the scene, but Bratko said the utility had to go through the street to reach the leak.

Bratko said Rand first was closed at 12:30 p.m. and could remain closed for several hours.

"We have no idea [when the road will open]," Bratko said. "Nicor's still working."
