Palatine Police Blotter: Man Tries to Steal Drill by Hiding it in Clothes

A laptop computer, computer bag and external hard drive were stolen from a patio of a home in the 1100 block of East Randville Drive at around 6:45 p.m. The victim was doing work on the outside patio and went inside the house and upon returning discovered the items were taken. The items were valued at $2,610.

John P. Bens, 46, of Elgin, was charged with misdemeanor retail theft after concealing a Milwaukee Hammer Drill valued at $299 somewhere on his person from Home Depot, 825 E. Dundee Road, and leaving the store without paying sometime between 2 p.m. and 2:06 p.m. Bens was accompanied by a woman who was not charged.

A four-door black Nissan Altima was burglarized sometime between July 25 at 7 p.m. and July 26 at 6:40 p.m. in the 1400 East block of Joan Drive. Removed from the car was car stereo equipment from the dashboard, rear deck and truck, valued at $6,000. The dashboard was also damaged. The vehicle was believed to have been locked, but there were no signs of forced entry.
A laptop bag was stolen after it was left on the ground at Details Car Wash, 2370 N. Hicks Road, sometime between 5:20 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. The owner was cleaning the car and forgot to put the bag back inside the vehicle and drove to another part of the lot. Security camera footage shows a man in an SUV picked up the bag and drove away.
Angelica M. Vargas, of Palatine, was charged with violation of bail bond, retail theft, battery and resisting a peace officer after taking pain relievers, sleep aids and Redbulls valued at $100.57 from Jewel-Osco, 423 E. Dundee Road, and leaving without paying sometime between 11 p.m. and 11:23 p.m.
Patrick B. Carney, 22, of Prospect Heights, was charged with DUI, improper lane usage, improper turn, uninsured motor vehicle, unlawful possession of cannabis and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop at Plum Grove and Daniels roads at 2:43 a.m.

Jessica L. Reczek, 29, of Palatine was charged with misdemeanor retail theft after taking several cosmetic items valued at $49.68 from Wal-Mart, 1555 N. Rand Road, and leaving the store without paying sometime between 5:10 p.m. and 5:40 p.m.
