Palatine Fire Department Beats Down Northwest Highway Brush Fire

Crews fought fire for more than two hours while protecting residential, commercial and industrial areas near 300 block of west Northwest Highway Monday afternoon.

Palatine firefighters fought a difficult brushfire Monday afternoon for more than two hours in the 300 block of west Northwest Highway.

The fire, which ultimately burned nine acres of grass and marshland on the south side of Northwest Highway, was reported at 2:21p.m.

According to a press release from the village of Palatine, the first crews arrived by 2:24p.m. and dealt with difficult conditions including standing water and mud.

“Part of the reason it took as long as it did [to put the fire out] was because of the condition of the property around it,” said Scott Andersen, fire chief.

The fire threatened residential, commercial and industrial areas nearby around Charter Hall Drive and the backlots of properties off Colfax, Andersen said.

Fire crews manned units downwind from the fire, the press release said, along Hidden Prairie Court, Fairview Circle and Colfax to prevent the fire from spreading.

Fifteen firefighters and two command officers were at the scene, while off-duty firefighters were called in to cover their stations as a precautionary measure, Andersen said.

No injuries or property damage were reported.

The fire was contained at 4:27p.m. and was officially struck by 4:54p.m.

This is the second brush fire in the last few months Palatine firefighters have fought.

A on March 11 where ultimately, more than 50 acres of land was burned.

Improperly disposed of smoking materials were to blame in the Deer Grove fire, but the cause of this one is still under investigation, Andersen said.
