UPDATED: Hit-and-Run Driver Flees Scene, Then Crashes Into Police Car

Arlington Heights police say a 69-year-old man hit three cars in total with his vehicle Sunday afternoon in the Mitsuwa Marketplace. 

Arlington Heights Police Seargent Shawn Gyorke said the Arlington Heights resident hit the first vehicle around 1:30 p.m. Sunday as he entered the parking lot in the 100 block of E. Algonquin Road. The car was being operated by a driver at the time. 

The second vehicle was hit, Gyorke said, as it was parked in the lot, and the third car struck by the driver was an Arlington Heights police car that was responding to reports of the incident. 

Paramedics arrived on the scene and transported the driver of the offending vehicle to Northwest Community Hospital. Gyorke said there were no obvious signs of drug or alcohol use. 

No one else was injured and only minor damage was reported on all vehicles involved. 

Gyorke said in cases like this, it is not uncommon for police to request the state to re-examine a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely, to determine if the cause of dangerous driving is possibly health-related. 

The investigation into this accident is ongoing.

A strange turn of events after an initial car versus car accident in Arlington Heights Sunday afternoon. 

The hit-and-run driver committed two offenses Sunday, first hitting a vehicle near Mitsuwa Marketplace, and then crashing into an Arlington Heights police car, according to the Arlington Cardinal. 

The initial offense occurred at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in the 100 block of E. Algonquin Road, the Arlington Cardinal reports. When the suspect driver returned to the scene, he hit a police car from Arlington Heights that was reponding to the crash. One person was sent to the hospital.
