Fremd Students Face Charges From Inverness Brawl, Stabbing

Five current and former Fremd High School students face charges related to a May 26 brawl.

Five current and former students face criminal charges related to a May 26 brawl in Inverness during which an 18-year-old was stabbed.

Inverness Police Chief Bob Haas said four juveniles between the ages of 15 and 17 have been charged with fighting in public. The police also charged an 18-year-old who was stabbed and taken to Northwest Community Hospital with minor injuries. The Inverness Police Department declined to release the name of the 18-year-old, despite the criminal charges.

Haas said the juvenile who stabbed the 18-year-old does not face additional charges because he was attacked and did not initiate the confrontation.

The fighting in public charge is a misdemeanor. If found guilty, the youths face a fine of up to $500 and community service. Three of those charged are from Palatine, one is from Schaumburg, and one was from a rural area near Palatine.

The 18-year-old has since graduated from Fremd High School. Haas said all of the current students face disciplinary action from Fremd, including suspensions.

The Township High School District 211 school board voted to expel a student at its June 16 meeting, the first board meeting since the fight. The board also voted to allow the student to attend the North Cook Young Adult Academy for the next two years and hold the expulsion in abeyance as long as the student was in good standing there.

"This sends a message that this type of behavior will not be tolerated by the school district or the surrounding communities," Haas said.

Dozens of high school students turned out to watch a planned fight at South Park in Inverness on May 26. The park is located near Clover Drive and Thompson Way, east of Ela Road. Haas said the crowd of students numbered around 60.

The two students involved in the first fight were charged, as was a third student who entered the fray. The 18-year-old and the juvenile then began fighting, during which the 18-year-old was stabbed.

The size of the crowd watching the brawl was large enough that Inverness had to be assisted by Hoffman Estates and Palatine police.
