Cook County Forest Preserve Police confirm the man found naked in Penny Road Pond near South Barrington Wednesday was murdered. 

Authorities tell Patch David P. Campbell, 27, of Waukegan was strangled to death. His body was found partially submerged in the pond located near Old Sutton Road and Penny Road. 

Police tell Patch Campbell faced a drug charge in 2008 for alleged possession of 50 grams of cocaine. Campbell also was charged with aggravated fleeing and bodily injury, court records state.

The drug charges were dropped and Campbell entered a negotiated plea of guilty on the other charges. He was sentenced to 24 months probation.

Campbell's body was discovered by someone walking in the Forest Preserve around 9 a.m on July 6.
