Arlington Heights Barricade Suspect Charged with Reckless Discharge of Firearm

Jeffrey T. Sterner, 38, was charged also with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm while his FOIA card was revoked. Stern fired several shots into his condo causing a three-hour stand-off in downtown Arlington Heights Saturday.

The  has been charged by the Cook County State’s Attorney, according to an Arlington Heights Police media release.

Jeffrey T. Sterner, 38, of 151 W. Wing Street attended bond court Friday at the Rolling Meadows Courthouse, and was charged with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm while FOIA Card was Revoked.

Since Saturday, May 4, , the release stated.

Police say the investigation determined that at 5:20 p.m. Saturday, Sterner entered the condominium unit he shared with his mother, and fired several shots.

Sterner’s mother called 9-1-1 and reported her son was despondent and threatening to take his own life, the release stated. She was able to disarm him, and left the unit. She was then taken into protective custody by police.

Arlington Heights Police activated the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System (NIPAS). After three hours of no communication with Sterner, law enforcement forcibly entered the condominium unit and took him into custody.

Investigators found one of the several bullets resulting from Sterner firing the gun; it exited the condominium through the front door and was found in a neighbor’s closet, the release states. The neighbor was not home for the duration of the incident.
