Palatine Historical Society Presents Victorian Teas in April

Eight tea services to be offered at historical Clayson House in April.

Palatine Historical Society presents their 19th annual Victorian Teas at historical Clayson House in Palatine. Tea services will be offered on April 6, 7, 13 and 14 at noon and 3:00pm. Each sitting includes an elegant afternoon of tea, sandwiches, scones and sweets. A historical program is presented each year, showcasing various aspects of Victorian life. This year’s program will center on collections; who collected things, what items did they collect, and why? Each guest will also receive a keepsake from the event.

The teas take place in the restored lower level rooms of the George H. Clayson House, 224 E. Palatine Road, Palatine. In 1867, Clayson purchased ten acres of land from Palmer Webster, land that encompassed the entire block surrounded by Palatine Rd., Northwest Hwy., Wood St., and Oak St. He used this property as a nursery where he grew fruit trees and grapes. In 1869 he was elected a trustee by the village board to fill a vacancy. The 1870 census shows that he lived on Benton Street with his mother, wife, and two children, Frank and Charles. In 1873, Clayson contracted to build the house on his property that is now the Clayson House Museum; it cost approximately $2300.

Victorian tea tickets are $25 per person and this event sells out annually. For tickets or more information, contact the Palatine Historical Society at 847-991-6460.
