Roskam Highlights National Human Trafficking Awareness Day

Over the weekend,  Congressman Peter Roskam (IL-06) released the following statement marking January 11 as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day and the entire month of January, which is National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

“This month brings critical attention to human trafficking, a sometimes hidden issue that is a real threat in America. At risk populations continue to fall victim to the criminal trafficking network, giving urgency to our work in the House to address the issue. The Ways and Means Committee on which I serve has held hearings on the dangers of human trafficking in the foster care system, and we are actively working on legislation to strengthen trafficking data collection at all levels of government and law enforcement to improve our understanding of and responses to human trafficking. I am also continuing to work with my colleagues to build support for The End Sex Trafficking Act we are sponsoring to make child anti-trafficking a national priority. We still have a lot of work to do, and this month helps raise awareness for this very important cause. Through awareness and education, together we can give law enforcement the tools they need, bring criminals to justice and protect vulnerable individuals from the dangers of human trafficking.”
