Herman Christian Stegen, 86, passed away Monday, April 16. He is survived by his longtime partner Elaine Powell and their children Kathleen, Marc, Charles, Roy, and Pamela; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and three brothers Robert, Eldon and Earl.
Born in Peru, IL, the son of Herman F. and Marie Stegen, Herman played football at Northwestern University. He graduated with an engineering degree in 1946 and went on to serve as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy on the USS Pine Island. During his time on the Pine Island, Herman was attached to Admiral Byrd’s historic expedition to Antarctica.
Herman was an avid golfer, wood worker, and NU Wildcats football fan. He also enjoyed bowling, bridge, and traveling with Elaine and his family.

Visitation for Herman will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at the Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, 201 N. Northwest Hwy., Palatine. Interment will be private.
