NWSRA and Palatine Women's Club Unified

On Wednesday, August 24 the Northwest Special Recreation Association’s (NWSRA) Unified Softball teams swung for the fences with some friendly competition and a fun barbecue for all in attendance.  The Unified Softball program teams up individuals who have disabilities with individuals who do not have disabilities for friendly softball competition.  This program encourages inclusion in a positive sports environment, and has been a favorite summer time activity for many years at NWSRA.  This year, the Palatine Women’s Club cheered on the athletes and volunteered at the Unified Softball program’s annual event, which hosted over 100 teammates and their families.  Held in Palatine, this event has grown over the years to become a highlight of the summer at NWSRA.

Palatine Women’s Club representative Linda Millard stated “Our club is geared towards helping and making a difference in the community.  We always have a lot of volunteers willing to help, as we know all of the NWSRA programs are wonderful.”  Over the years, the Palatine Women’s Club has helped with Unified Bowling, Softball, attended the SLSF Fashion Show, and volunteered at the annual NWSRA Family Fest.

The Palatine Womens’ Club has been involved in NWSRA and SLSF activities for about 15 years, and have received many awards for their outstanding contributions.  NWSRA salutes the Palatine Women’s Club’s contributions and dedication to individuals with disabilities.

The Northwest Special Recreation Association (NWSRA) was formed in 1973 to provide recreation services to individuals with disabilities.  NWSRA is an extension of 17 member park districts located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.  This type of agency is unique to Illinois.  NWSRA offers public access, year round recreational programming to over 14,000 individuals with disabilities in its service area. NWSRA is the largest of all special recreation associations and is a leader among peers with over 18,000 registrations for programs in 2012.  NWSRA is a two-time National Recreation and Park Association National Gold Medal Award winner and was recognized as a Distinguished Accredited Agency by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, an honor only 10% of Illinois park and recreation agencies have received.  The mission statement of NWSRA is “We exist to provide outstanding opportunities through recreation for children and adults with disabilities.”

NWSRA’s Partner Park Districts

NWSRA serves 17 northwest suburban park districts located within Cook County and southern Lake County (see the attached map of the NWSRA service area).  These park districts include Arlington Heights, Bartlett, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Inverness, Mt.
