No Peace for Gay Activists

Increasingly oppressive legislation won’t fix the problem

Submitted by Teri Paulson

Last week we posted an article explaining how the LGBT rights movement is destroying freedom by launching successful lawsuits against Christian business owners for refusing to violate their consciences by participating in celebrations of same-sex unions.  At the end of the article we pointed out that these lawsuits are not motivated by a lack of access to goods and services for LGBT people.  Therefore, they must be motivated by something else.  That is the subject of this today’s post.

We would suggest that the apparent inability of gay activists to ‘live and let live’ is really confirmation of the fragility of their cause.  People who are comfortable and confident in their beliefs do not normally feel the need to punish dissent or coerce unwilling participation -- especially regarding something as personal as sexual morality.  By contrast, here seems to be a powerful, relentless force animating LGBT activists.

We would suggest that that force is PAIN.  (There is a truly excellent and incredibly insightful article by Eric Holmberg over at Barbwire explaining this in psychological terms.)  However, the bible spoke about this kind of pain long before modern psychology;

"the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them..."

~Romans 2:15

In other words, the Bible tells us that the emotional pain LGBT people experience is real, but it comes not from the opinions and actions of Christians, but from inside themselves.  It is the collateral damage from an internal struggle between sinful desires and the truth, planted there by God Himself.  In the words of Jay Budziszewski, who wrote a book of the same title, there are certain things we just “can’t not know...” The truth about the sinfulness of homosexual behavior is one of them -- which is why reminders of that truth, in any form, cannot be tolerated by LGBT activists.

While we can empathize with the pain and struggles of those who are caught up in sexual sin, we cannot cure it by outlawing dissent and forcing people to violate their consciences with more and more oppressive legislation.  Eric Holmberg rightly points out in his article that “studies show that even in the most “gay friendly” societies -- like Denmark and Holland -- the higher levels of psychological problems found among homosexuals are essentially the same as for those in less “enlightened” societies.”

Peace with God is the only cure.  It is the only real, true and lasting peace.  It is a free gift available to all people, including those who experience LGBT attractions.  The sticking point is this; it comes on God's terms.  Those terms are faith and repentance and they are the same for all -- gay and straight alike.

There is hope for the peace that LGBT people seek, but it’s not to be found in lawsuits and oppressive legislation. It is found in the Prince of Peace Himself.

“Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls.”

~Jesus
