What Do Employers Look for in College Graduates?

What do employers look for in college graduates?

With springtime comes an influx of new college graduates looking to begin their careers. Getting a job without any professional experience is a difficult prospect. Today we will be exploring some of the things that potential employers are looking for in college graduates.

These days, employers look to social media for more information so watch your social media presence. A good LinkedIn profile can go a long way, but a bad Facebook or Twitter page can erase any goodwill. You have a handful of options when it comes to your social media activity. Either edit it so that no employer could find fault, or lock it down so that no employer can find it. One thing to consider is that some companies want to know that you are familiar with these websites so it may be in your best interest to edit rather than erase.

Experience is an excellent way to distinguish yourself. You don't necessarily need direct experience in the field you are applying to for jobs, it certainly helps, but general work experience can say a lot. A willingness to work hard, get along with other people and develop new skills makes you look good to an interviewer. Some great ways to flesh out your resume in college is to participate in an internship, start your own small business or participate in charity work.

Before you apply or go for an interview remember to do your homework. Tailor your cover letters to individual companies and be sure to have questions when you go in for interviews. This demonstrates that you are truly interested in working with them and it also lets them know you are willing to put some work in up front.

It’s also a good idea to draw on your past. Having good references can be the difference between you and someone with a similar background so be sure to touch base with your potential references and let them know they might be receiving a phone call. Also, make sure that your resume details any specific coursework that would be relevant to the positions you are trying to obtain.
