5 Steps to Take to Make Sure Your Loved is Being Cared for Properly

If your loved one resides in a nursing home, you are also probably taking on the additional stress of wondering if they are cared for properly. Fortunately, there are few steps that you can take to become more aware of the care that your loved one is given.

1.     Visit often – Visiting your loved one often is the best way to ensure that they are under good care. If staff sees that your loved one has frequent visitors, they will be more likely to care for them properly. It can also be a chance for you to check on their physical appearance and emotional behavior. If something does not seem right, you have the right to ask questions. If you feel that questions aren’t being answered thoroughly, you may want to contact a nursing home abuse attorney to begin an investigation.

2.     Ask to see charts- If you have the legal right, ask to see charts. Make sure that the charts are routinely filled out and signed off on.

3.     Call often- If you live out of state or are in another area that you do not have access to see a loved one often, you can call, email or even face time (a common technology on computers and phones where you can see who you are talking to on a video camera). Ask your loved ones questions about their everyday routines and if they are comfortable in their settings.

4.     Reach out to someone you trust- If you live out of state, ask someone you trust who lives local to your loved one’s nursing home to visit them.

5.     Learn about resident’s rights- Take the time to research about the rights of residents. Given by state and federal law, residents have rights that you may not be aware of. Nursing home facilities have the responsibility to carry out these rights and treat every resident fairly. If you feel that any of these rights were violated and thus caused physical and or emotional pain, call a nursing home abuse attorney to learn about the steps that you can take to get your loved one back on track to proper treatment.
