Palatine Native Steve Herbst Named 1 of 3 Winners in Local Heroes Contest

Steve Herbst, who is quadriplegic, will now receive a new mobility van from the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association after being named a winner in a recent contest.

After months of votes were cast by friends, family and others, lifelong Palatine resident Steve Herbst came out on top as one of three winners in the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) Mobility Van Contest.

Early Friday, Herbst along with Abigail Carter and Jeff Scott were named winners of the 2013 Local Heroes Contest.

Each will receive a custom designed mobility van to assist with their disabilities.

In 1980 as he was playing football for Palatine High School, Herbst was tackled and suffered a devastating injury. His spinal cord was severed, causing him to become a quadriplegic.

Since then, Herbst has not let that aspect of his life stop him from achieving many things, including having a family, a successful career and being involved in the Palatine community through volunteering and civic duty

More than 1,100 people entered the contest, and the winners were chosen based on the number of votes they received, and their personal story of triumph.

Congratulations to Steve, and kudos to the Palatine community for getting out the vote for him!
