Home Depot Renovates Little City Home

Little City residents were surprised after arriving home from work on Tuesday, Oct. 4, when they were able to see what the 50 Home Depot volunteers and skilled tradesmen/women completed during the day.

Their home was in need of renovation so The Home Depot volunteered services and donated supplies. Projects throughout the day included, refinishing and staining the deck, building a new movable cedar table for outside, painting the living room and kitchen, cleaning furniture and replacing light fixtures.

The Home Depot provided the eight men with many surprises, including an activity room in their basement, which they previously could not use due to water damage. Volunteers replaced the carpet on the stairs, put in a new vinyl floor, replaced the molding and painted the whole downstairs.

In anticipation for the day, the men made posters for The Home Depot volunteers the night before to show their appreciation for the volunteers. Little City Executive Director, Shawn Jeffers, was also there to thank the volunteers for their hard work. The Palatine Home Depot coordinated the event and 10 other area Home Depots participated.

Little City offers a variety of living arrangements for the residents, providing choice on where and how they live. Little City’s Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILA) provides people with autism and other intellectual and developmental disabilities with the opportunity to live in residential communities supported by Little City staff 24 hours a day. The residents learn to live as independently as possible in a home environment. Staff assists the residents in activities of daily living, including cooking and cleaning. Little City has 15 group homes throughout the northwest suburbs.
