This is a cleome bloom, otherwise known as Spiderflower. Cleome is unusual not only for its height, but also because of the long wispy stamen hanging down from the upright flowers. Blooms range in color from snow white, to pale pink, bright pink and also purple.
They are one of my favorite flowers because they provide a never ending show until the first frost. Before the petals unfold, they are tightly bound and remind me of birthday candles on top of a cake. Their intricate parts make them a fascinating find in any summer garden.
