This time of year my mind wanders back in time to the wonderful memories I have of driving along with my mother and sister and spotting a roadside stand where we'd stop for sweet corn and tomatoes.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the wonderful grocery stores we have in and around Palatine where there's a wide variety of produce from all over the world. And I do enjoy the farmers market. But I miss the excitement of stopping at Ethel's Place and Goebbert's that are all but a memory for many of us who have lived in this area for many years.
Although these places were larger than your typical roadside stand, they had that "ma and pop" feel that I yearn for so much in the summer.
There's nothing like pulling off a paved road onto a stone covered makeshift parking lot, and hearing the gravel crack and spit under your tires. Then walking up to display after display of freshly picked peppers, corn, tomatoes and peaches.
On a hot day, you could smell the sweetness of the melons. I need to take a drive with my husband in the near future and hope we discover a roadside stand.
For me, it just won't feel like summer if we don't .
