THIS WEEKEND: Pair of holiday concerts at Harper

Seize the holiday’s musical spirit – without a drive into the city – at two upcoming performances at Harper College.

The Piano Ensemble’s Holiday Variety Spectacular will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, followed by the Harper Symphony Orchestra’s Sounds of the Holidays at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15.

Both performances will be held at the Performing Arts Center on Harper’s main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road, Palatine.

The Piano Ensemble concert, under the direction of Dr. Janice Razaq, will feature student and faculty artists performing works by Anderson, Bach, Brahms, Gershwin and others. Twelve performers on six pianos will take the stage for the grand finale.

The next day, the Harper Symphony Orchestra will perform selections including Leroy Anderson's Christmas Festival Overture and Rimsky Korsakov's Christmas Eve Suite. The orchestra is made up of community members and students under the direction of Brian Groner, who has toured as conductor for The Moscow Classical Ballet. The family-friendly concert also will feature a sing-along.

Tickets for both performances are $10 for general admission, with discounts available for all students (with valid ID) and seniors. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted free.
