On Campus: Former Gabrielle Giffords Intern to Speak at Harper
Former Congressional intern Daniel Hernandez knows the value of a college education and making your own success. As a first generation college graduate, he has spent his life overcoming challenges and creating his own opportunities.
Hernandez will share his story and answer audience questions when he appears at Harper College at 7 p.m. Monday, September 23, in the J Building Theater, Room J143, Building J, on the College’s main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.
A nationally known advocate for education and gun control, Hernandez was an intern in the office of Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords when she and 18 others were shot by a gunman in 2008. It was Hernandez who is credited with saving Giffords’ life by assisting her until emergency services could arrive on the scene.

Though not a native English speaker, Hernandez pushed himself to learn the language on his own and eventually became the first member of his family to receive a Bachelor’s Degree. He recently graduated from the University of Arizona.
