Harper to Hold First Ever "College for a Day" Event

The very thought of going to college, from navigating the campus to choosing from a catalog of thousands of courses, is overwhelming to many – even more so for those still completing their high school equivalency requirements. That’s why Harper College is giving current students in its Adult Education program the chance to get a true glimpse into what life on the Palatine campus would really be like.

Harper’s first College for a Day event, put on by the Adult Education Department, will provide GED students with the opportunity to learn about transitioning to the College. They can also tour the campus and sign up for two sample college classes already in session.

“Our goal is reduce the intimidation about college life and to hopefully increase the students’ excitement about moving into college level courses,” said Devin Chambers, the College’s Adult Education Development and Transition Coordinator.

Harper's GED curriculum includes a unique bridge program that provides a smooth transition from GED coursework to college-level classes, with a goal of preparing the students for higher education or specific careers in healthcare or 21st century jobs in technical trades such as HVAC. The November 20 event is tailored for GED and English literacy students currently enrolled in Harper’s program.

Harper has offered smaller campus field trips to off-campus students in the past, but this year’s event is the first time it’s been expanded to include the opportunity to sit in on actual classes in session. Chambers said College for a Day is designed to give these prospective students a glimpse into what college can offer.

The sample classes students will attend will each last 50 minutes and will be tailored specifically to GED and English literacy students. In the afternoon, attendees can take a campus tour, explore career options in the Career Center or meet with representatives from support services such as Financial Aid.

While College for a Day is limited to Harper’s current Adult Education students, other prospective GED and English literacy students are encouraged to call the Adult Education Department at 847.925.6223 to learn about how to enroll in classes for the spring semester.
