On Campus: Theatre Club Wows Its Youngest Audience

Harper College's Theatre Club performed for a much younger audience than they're used to when they staged the musical "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" for kids in Harper's day care program.

The student actors in the Harper College Theatre Club performed for a much younger audience than they're used to when they staged a collection of scenes from the musical "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown" for the kids in Harper's day care program. The young audience laughed, cheered and sometimes even danced along as the actors performed "My Blanket and Me," "Suppertime," "Beethoven Day" and, of course, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."

The performance came out of the club's desire to continue performing throughout the year; they met once a week during their free time to rehearse and choreograph the production under the direction of Theatre Club sponsor and Harper College Theatre Director Kevin Long.

In addition to giving Theatre Club members a chance to flex some musical theater muscle, Long said that the opportunity to perform children’s theater offers the club the chance to bring live theater to a young and enthusiastic audience. “Performing for young children is a great opportunity for our students,” Long said. “You have to be completely honest in your work or they will not respond. We respect our youngest audience and have been working hard to create something that is specific, honest and at the same time fun and moving.”
