Clocks will spring forward an hour at 2 a.m. Sunday as Daylight Saving Time commences.

Why do we observe Daylight Saving Time and how did this annual right come to pass?

Daylight Saving Time was conceived as a way to make better use of evening daylight and to conserve energy, according to www.timeanddate.com. The concept of Daylight Saving Time dates back at least until 1784 when Benjamin Franklin published the essay "An Economical Project for Diminising the Cost of Light," the website states.

According to the website, Germany was the first country to adopt it during World War I, followed closely by other countries involved in the conflict. It was adopted again during World War II as a way to save energy.

The website states that from 1987 until 2006 the Daylight Saving Period in the U. S was seven months starting on the first Sunday in April and ending in October. That period was extended one month - from the second Sunday in March until the first Sunday in Novebmer – in 2007, according to the site.
