Pinot Grigio 101: A Closer Look at This Popular Wine

Pinot Grigio is a dry white wine that has been consistently gaining popularity for some time now. It is produced in numerous countries across the world and comes in many varieties. In this post we will be looking at the history of Pinot Grigio and some of its common characteristics.

Pinot Grigio originates from France where it is known as Pinot Gris. It has been produced, in one form or another, for over 700 years. Pinot means pinecone in French and refers to the shape of groups of Pinot Grigio grapes. These grapes are thought to be clones or mutates of Pinot Noir grapes. They are best grown in cool climates that can promote sweetness and increase alcohol content in wines. Coloration varies widely between blue, pink, gray, and brown.

Pinot Grigio grapes are grown on a number of continents. The wine is still referred to in France as Pinot Gris. Italy is the world's largest producer of Pinot Grigio, and it may even be its most popular wine. Germany and Hungary are among other European producers. Australia and New Zealand both have a history of producing quality Pinot Grigios. The first American Pinot Grigio was from Oregon, though California is best known for it today.

Where a Pinot Grigio is made typically has a profound impact of how the wine smells, tastes, and looks. Pinot Grigio from Italy tends to be drier and leaner than that from France or America. France makes the least dry variation in Pinot Gris, and it is characterized as full-bodied and rich. American Pinot Grigios are crisp and smooth. The typical color falls in the yellow range, from straw to golden. Notes of fruit are common on the nose and palette.

Pinot Grigio's popularity is hardly undue. It is a versatile wine with many international variations. When it comes to food, it pairs best with lighter fare. Cheese trays, seafood, and chicken are all great choices. If you have any further questions about Pinot Grigio, please don't hesitate to stop by d’Vine Wine and Gifts and ask an associate!
