Dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup

High fructose corn syrup has health risks and is in more store-bought desserts than you may know. Find out about some of the negatives of high fructose corn syrup in this post.

High-fructose corn syrup, corn syrup processed to convert part of its glucose into fructose, is used as a cheaper alternative to sugar. Food manufacturers frequently use high-fructose corn syrup in fruit-flavored drinks, sodas and many processed foods. Although high-fructose corn syrup is approved for consumption, some are concerned that it may affect your body differently than regular table sugar does because it is  processed.

Research

In a 2007 study by the American Chemical Society,  researchers found some evidence that high-fructose corn syrup contained high  amounts of reactive compounds that could cause diabetes, according to  ScienceDaily. They also discovered a link between those who drink high-fructose  corn syrup sweetened soda and increased risk of diabetes. In a 2010 study by  Princeton University researchers, rats that had access high-fructose corn syrup  gained significantly more weight than those that had access to table sugar, even  though both groups at the same amount of calories overall. The rats that had  access to high-fructose corn syrup also became more likely to have abnormal body  fat increases and increased blood fats than other rats. *
