My Name Isn't Daisy, But My Mother's Name Is Rose

Let's all be kinder to each other, like the old time song titles on sheet music might suggest.

“My Name Isn’t Daisy But My Mother’s Name Is Rose”

A Girl Scout troop has just left my studio. They earned their “Vaudeville 1” Fun Patch. So much boisterous enthusiasm! Silly fun. The girls were Daisy Scouts and they inspired my headline for this blog.

History is my Vaudeville job. Old-time music fills a lot of space in my mind. Listening to some contemporary song lyrics, it’s no wonder we imagine people are only getting more cynical, as time marches on.

What about “the good old days”?  Was society kinder and gentler back then? Were people more innocent than worldly? Remember, there was no technological capability to instantaneously shout out the world’s troubles.

It’s hard to imagine the world wasn’t a nicer place back when these were some of the popular song titles of the day. Seriously.

“I Hope I Don’t Intrude”  1877

“There’s Always a Seat in the Parlor for You” 1881

“Always Take Mother’s Advice” 1884

“Her Tears Drifted Out With the Tide”  1890

“Sights in a Dime Museum” 1891

“Such a Nice Girl, Too”  1892

“She Is More To Be Pitied Than Censured”  1898

“My Money Never Gives Out”  1900

“Brown Eyes, Why Are You So Blue?” 1901

“It’s Delightful to Be Married”  1906

“I’m Tying the Leaves, So They Won’t Come Down” 1907

“When a Fellow’s on the Level with a Girl That’s on the Square”  1907

“If the Wind Had Only Blown the Other Way”  1909

I have never heard any of these melodies but sheet music for these songs was on pianos all over America. People sang the lyrics (probably in harmony) celebrating these timely gems. That’s why I love my Vaudeville classes, where it’s never out of style to be kind.
