Vision for Vacancy: Former Idols Location

The former Idols building was demolished in May of 2012. What do you think would be the next best use for this property at the intersection of Rand and Dundee Roads?

Idols lost its liquor license in November of 2010 and closed its doors shortly after, and the long vacant building was finally demolished this past spring.

Former Idols owner Michael Koumandarakis was convicted in 2008 of felony criminal damage to property and misdemeanor battery. Felons are not allowed to hold liquor licenses in the village

The property at 1601 N. Rand Road, which intersects at Dundee Road, has been barren since May.

Village Manager Reid Ottesen said that national companies have looked at the property, but so far nothing solid is planned to move there.

I think a supervised activity center for teens would be a good choice. No doubt the village is aware of the vandalism, thefts and so forth that currently dominate the area so these kids need a safe place to go. It could include counselors, local business mentors, activities like rock climbing wall, ball courts, chess/checker boards, skateboard ramps, musical instrument jam rooms, rooms to just chill and talk with friends. The youth in this immediate area needs positive direction.

We know what it won't be - a pawn shop, tatoo parlor or a chicken coop. Maybe another used car lot?

Well said but that means our taxes in palatine would go up somehow. We need to find private investors to help fund the money. Let think outside the box and get the one of many vacant properties taken care

sounds like a great idea, but I think it would bring bigger problems. As we all know there are gangs in Palatine as well as everywhere else. When u get rival gangs together, there is bound to be problems. Even in the 70's watch what happened in the movie"West side story" I really do think there should be a place for teens to go .

Who cares what they put there? It's right at the farthest corner of gangland central so anything you build there will be destroyed by those idiots sooner or later anyway.

Red Lobster - the closest one is in Schaumburg. Teens can get a job there waiting tables and stay out of trouble. I like Coopers Hawk but I think it is a different league.
