Palatine's ‘Fix This! Musical Instrument Repair’ Celebrates Expansion

Located at Northwest Highway and Rohlwing Road, Fix This! is a musical instrument repair shop that has expanded to include new and consignment instrument sales and rentals.

Fix This! Musical Instrument Repair celebrated the businesses expansion into a full service instrument repair and sales shop with a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday.

Mayor Jim Schwantz led the ceremony at 746 E. Northwest Highway along with , her employees and Palatine Area Chamber of Commerce representatives.

The business previously was located at the storefront to the east and handled mostly repairs with a small retail area. Fix This! has expanded into the adjacent space, and increased its offerings to include new and consignment sales of woodwinds and brass instruments.

“The instruments sold on consignment are still in good shape and well maintained, and around half the cost of new,” Reidel said. “And by
having consignments, we are now offering a service to buyers and sellers.”

A brand new trumpet, the Bach Strad 37 for example, comes at a cost of $3,000 new.

One thing that hasn’t changed is Reidel’s goal of offering quick turnaround for repairs.

“We shoot for a week from pick-up to drop-off, and we can work with our customers if an instrument is needed back quicker for performances or other engagements,” Reidel said.

The business is starting to venture in to guitars, and Reidel said lessons for woodwinds and brass instruments will be coming soon.

Reidel, a flutist herself, has been doing repairs as a sub-contractor for other music stores for 13 years.

“I realized that I could run a business myself with all of the work, and had a goal of adding sales in, which we have now done,” Reidel said.

Fix This! also recently was added as an approved vendor for District 15 to handle instrument repairs as well as sales.
